Carefully inspect the padding of the computer storage compartment.   This is the most important aspect regarding the safety of your laptop.  Look especially at the padding on the bottom, which will protect the computer whenever you place you backpack on the floor.

Padding will also protect your body from sharp pointy book corners, and bulky equipment.   Over longer distances, chafing can develop, so check for wide straps and ample padding in appropriate locations.

To protect your spine and joins, verify that the handle is the correct height relative to your hand.   Leaning over to one side for long distances is not advisable.   A padded handle will provide comfort over distances, making your laptop even more of an asset.

The trim and stitching should be attractive and sturdy.   Avoid any unit that looks like the stitching is loose or ready to come apart.

A backpack that has every feature that you need is worth a little more.  You will likely have your rolling laptop backpack for several years and many miles, so be careful not to compromise too much.
